Preventing injuries at work

Minor injuries at work are common, but by following the simple steps below, you can make sure that your workplace is safe.

Repetitive Strain Injuries

Repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) can occur when individuals sit at desks for long periods of time. Today, virtually all office jobs require the use of a computer, which involves repetitive movements that can easily lead to back pain, strained muscles and musculoskeletal disorders.

To avoid such injuries, make sure desks and chairs are adjusted as necessary so that there is plenty of lumbar support. This helps to prevent problems such as back pain. Wrists should also be pointing straight forwards (in alignment with the forearms) to prevent wrist pain.

Falls

Slips, trips and falls are also common workplace accidents. It’s difficult to prevent them completely, but ensuring that floors are clear of obstructions will go a long way towards it.

In addition to this, spillages should be cleared up quickly so that individuals cannot slip. When spillages occur, put clear signs around the wet area so that everyone can see and avoid it.

It is also important to understand the risks when working at a height. Always ensure that the body is positioned properly before pushing something heavy. By positioning hands shoulder-width apart (at chest height) and ensuring feet are also shoulder-width apart, there is less chance of suffering an injury that leads to back pain.

Vehicle-related injuries and road accidents are also a concern for those who drive as part of their jobs. To prevent injuries and fatalities on the road, ask to see the company safe-driving policy that all drivers should adhere to. This should also be supplemented with road safety training. This will ensure that everyone will be fully aware of the dangers within their jobs, what to do in an emergency, and the best practice when it comes to road safety.
